| John
Avery was born in Georgia and grew up in a military family.
His father was a member of the U.S. Navy and the family spent
time living in Georgia, Maryland, Pennsylvania and Cairo,
Egypt. Upon his father's retirement John's family moved to
Georgia and then to Miami, Florida where John graduated from
high school.
John spent the next two years as a Military Policeman in the
U.S. Army, going to basic training at Ft. Jackson, S.C., Military
Police School at Ft. Gordon, GA and was then stationed in
W. Germany. John discharged from active duty after being stationed
in Kreigsfeld, W. Germany and Mannheim, W. Germany. and returned
to Miami, FL. In 1979 John reenlisted in the U.S. Army and
found his way to Ft. Ord, CA and has remained in the area
since then.
John
started his civilian career in law enforcement as a reserve
deputy for the Monterey County Sheriff's Officer and worked
as a correctional officer at Soledad State Prison before starting
his career with the Salinas Police Department in 1985.

Officer
Avery has served in a number of assignments since joining
the Salins Police Department. John has been a K-9 officer,
a Crime Scene Investigator, a School Resource Officer and
is currently a Field Training Officer. John has been trained
as a fingerprint analyst and has testified as a fingerprint
expert. John is a member of the of the Crisis Intervention
Team.
While assigned as a School Resource Officer John interacted
with hundreds of students at all school levels. He is certified
to teach and has taught the D.A.R.E. Program, the G.R.E.A.T.
Program and the D.E.F.Y. program.
John has worked with the PAL program since 1995 and has worked
with the Jr. Giants Progarm, the PAL baseball program and
has coordinated the PAL roller hockey program. John was recognized
by PAL in 1997 with a Special Recognition Award for his work
with PAL and recieved the PAL Police Officer Coach of the
Year in 1998. John has chaperoned social activity field trips
on numerous occasions.
